Eric Ray has been a researcher working on the La Belle Shipwreck Collection since January 2010. La Belle which sank in Matagorda Bay in 1686 belonged to La Salle. Eric is working on a complete inventory of the collection and helping write and edit a scholarly publication on La Belle. One of the chapters he is writing is about explosive devices found in La Belle called “fire pots”. Firepots are grenades imbedded in ceramic chamber pots filled with gunpowder. With some the help he made some firepots and blew them up. He will be showing the results of this experiment and sharing his research.

Make plans now to join us Fred Segundo, Director of Aviation, for the Corpus Christi International Airport updates the club on the state of aviation at local and national levels. He will also be discussing air service and business development at our airport and how it helps maintain services and lower costs for airlines, general aviation and cargo. Additionally he will talk about airfield projects currently underway and planned. You won’t want to miss it!

Join us this week as Tom Schmid informs the club about what is currently happening at the Texas State Aquarium. The mission of the Texas State Aquarium is to connect people with nature and inspire conservation of the Gulf of Mexico. Driscoll Middle School students will also be recognized.

For a Texas Laguna Madre expert, look no further than Dr. David McKee, professor of biology and mariculture. McKee’s latest book “Fishes of the Texas Laguna Madre” covers the history of the “Mother Lagoon” and provides insights into the characteristics and habits of the fish found in this hyper-saline environment, especially the “Big 5″ coastal sport fish. McKee has been involved in numerous mariculture-related activities at the local, state, national, and international levels. For nearly 20 years, McKee’s Marine Ecology classes have analyzed water quality and marine animals from Oso Bay, giving it a clean bill of health.

Join us as we listen to a panel talk about the CHRISTUS Spohn CareVan. The CareVan takes healthcare on the road to underserved areas in our South Texas communities to provide free health screenings, education and counseling to those who would otherwise not have it accessible to them. The mission of the CareVan is to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ to those who are uninsured, underserved & in need of health care. The CareVan will be parked outside. Following the program members are invited to tour the van and get their biometrics.

George Lister is the instructor and program chair of the new Ingleside Renewable Energy Education Center. It is a partnership between Del Mar College and the Texas State Technical College. The center prepares students to work in the wind industry right after graduation.

Colonel Christopher Carlile assumed command of the Corpus Christi Army Depot in June 2010. Come and hear him talk about what is taking place at CCAD. CCAD is currently the largest facility of its type in the world and serves as a depot training base for active duty Army, National Guard, Reserve and international personnel. The depot performs overhaul, repair, modification, recapitalization, retrofit, testing and modernization of helicopters, engines and components for all service and international sales of rotary wing aircraft.
