The Rotary name derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices. Often times we sit at the same table with the same people every week. So get to know your other fellow Rotarians in a small group environment! This year’s vocational luncheon will have groups of 4—5 people randomly selected to help facilitate more interaction within the small group. Contact Crystal Mead or the club office to sign up. Deadline to sign up is Wednesday, May 16th at noon.

Our speaker this week will be Fire Chief Robert Rocha. Chief Rocha has been with the department just over 100 days now. The Corpus Christi Fire Department is part of an overall public safety and protection system. The main function is to protect life, property, and the assets of the City from any emergency situation through preparedness, prevention, public education, the development and enforcement of fire codes, emergency medical services, fire suppression and hazardous material incident response.

Join us as she’ll discuss the tremendous economic impact CHRISTUS Spohn has in this community. CHRISTUS Spohn includes six hospital campuses including a Level II Trauma center, six family health centers, a nationally recognized cancer center, a provider network for self-insured employer groups, residency programs, and a host of community outreach programs.

Join us as Port Commissioner and Club member Mike Carrell updates us on the Port of Corpus Christi. The Port of Corpus Christi is the sixth largest port in the United States in total tonnage. With a straight, 45′ deep channel, the Port provides quick access to the Gulf, the United States inland waterway system and the world beyond. The Port delivers outstanding access to overland transportation with on-site and direct connections to three Class I railroads and uncongested interstate and state highways.

Club member Lee Smee received a Rotary Club of Corpus Christi Harvey Weil Sportsman Conservationist Award grant a few years ago to help study oyster reefs. Oyster reefs are important for Texas because oysters are commercially fished and provide a variety of important functions including decreasing coastal erosion, filtering sediments and harmful organisms from the water, and serving as important habitat for fish, crabs, and other animals. Join us to learn more about his research that our club helped sponsor.

Make plans to attend our luncheon this week. Our speaker will be Special Agent Dave Bishop with the U.S. Department of Justice. He will talk to the club about the drug cartels and drugs in general.

We will also be recognizing students from John Paul II.

Our speaker this week will be Laura Ewing. She is the President and CEO of the Texas Council on Economic Education. They work with teachers on staff development in economics and offer challenges for students such as the stock market game and other activities to enable them to become more knowledgeable about economics.
